Sundays at the club

August News

Dear Members,

I think we are all looking forward to the approach of spring, warmer weather, some growing of the surface and hopefully enough but not too much rain. The US Open is proving, in this first week of play, a wonderful display of Aussie talent including people like John Millman who played on our courts last year as part of the Davis Cup squad. If you've not watched it go to our web page (http://huntershilltennisclub.com.au/) or Facebook page and click on the video that Sally Stobo made last year about our Davis Cup week and see the delightful interview John gave on the joys of grass court tennis.

Badge Teams-Breaking News!!!

Mens teams

In exciting news two of our Mens Badge teams will be playing in Finals this Saturday (2nd September) at the club. At 11.30am HH4 ( playing in Div2.5), will play Manly whilst at 2.20pm HH3 (in Div 2.3 ) will play against  Mosman. We wish both teams the best of luck and if you are able to come down to the club and show them your support-they'd love it. The weather is predicted to be a beautiful 21C and sunny so perfect for watching.

HH1 and 2 Mens teams finished the season 7th and 5th respectively. Well done guys, we hope you enjoyed the competition and for those new to the grass this season we hope you've enjoyed the experience of playing on the surface.

Ladies teams

There are still two rounds to go (including Thursday 31st August) however none of our three teams will make the finals. HH1 and HH2 are currently in 6th and 8th position respectively in Div 1 whilst HH3 are in 6th spot in Div 2. There have been some very tough matches this season in both divisions and again we hope you have all enjoyed the competition and nature of inter club tennis particularly if it was your first season.

If anyone-either currently playing Badge or other- is interested in playing in the Spring Badge Comps (starting 7th October) which are played on Saturdays, please contact Graeme Sticka or Caroline Swan urgently to register your interest.

Ladies Special Singles

This event was held on Sunday 13th August with five players taking to the courts in warm and sunny conditions. A special mention to Liz Dossetor who dusted the cobwebs off her racquet and played very impressively after a long absence from the courts, don't leave it so long next time Liz!

The eventual winner was Kitty Dufficy who showed great fitness and form in all of her matches. Congratulations Kitty.

Club Championships

Don't forget to mark your diaries with the dates for the Club Championships- 13/14th October and 21st/22nd October. I'd urge all members to consider playing in the Championships. As my mother used to say its not about winning its about playing, taking part and having fun!

Graeme our Club Captain will be calling for entries closer to the dates so get out on court, practice, limber up for some singles matches perhaps, and find a partner for the doubles events.

New members

On behalf of the committee and members I'd like to welcome David Francis and Marco Di Pietro. Marco has joined as a playing member and is looking forward to getting back and playing tennis more regularly. David is resident overseas but has joined as a social member so he can enjoy playing tennis on his trips to Sydney. As always we wish you warm friendship and many years of play here at Hunters Hill.

Vale John Lange

Vale John Lange

It was with great sadness that we heard of John’s sudden death on the 13th August.  Judy Smith, one of our esteemed life members, who knew John well, wrote to let me know of John's place in club history.

"John was a tireless worker for the Club and always loved our lawn courts - not only to play on but also to care for. John first joined the Committee in 1992 and did not step down until the end of 2002.  During this time John served three years as a Vice President and five years as President of the Club.

John not only loved his social tennis but was always a keen competitor and over the years won numerous Club Championship events including both the Open Men’s Singles and Open Men’s Doubles.  John also represented the Club for numerous years as a badge player.

John always had an extremely keen interest in the maintenance of the courts and certainly had many long conversations with Paul Cashell, who during this period was responsible for the maintenance of the courts including the annual year end court refurbishment. John was also the backup when John Williamson (past member) who was employed at this time to do the cutting and marking of the courts was on holidays.  It was only at the end of the 2014 season that both John’s concluded this work at the club.

Finally, it is worth noting that after a visit to the Scarborough Tennis Cub in Western Australia, where John was playing tennis, he came back and suggested that the Club try a new format for our Sunday afternoon tennis.   At this time Sunday afternoon tennis was a standard set with a tie break at 6 all.  Suffice to say that the ‘new’ half hour block format was trialled and we have never looked back."

Rest in peace.

Visitors

We encourage members to bring along visitors to play (the same visitor can visit up to three times a year) but please remember to fill in the visitors book and pay the $20 fee.

Yoga

Our beautiful clubhouse is now currently being used for yoga three times a week. Both yoga teachers love the sun drenched space and peacefulness. Contact Tee (0407 827 957) or Mel (0404 870 254) directly to talk about classes. Both teachers run classes in school term time only.

Mondays @ 9.30am with Mel, Wednesdays @ 9.30am with Tee, Fridays @ 9.30am with Mel

Nepal Tennis

If you've been to the club lately you will have noticed a large basket near the front door full of tennis equipment bound for Nepal. A big thank you to all those members who have generously donated already.

For those who are unaware Tomas Vana from Marrickville LTC  will be travelling to Kathmandu in September, for a second time, as a volunteer to help run coaching clinics for junior players at Nepal's fledgling tennis academy. Tomas is collecting tennis equipment and tennis necessities to take with him to give to kids who want to play tennis but don't have the financial means to buy racquets, shoes, balls etc.  If you have any new balls, new grips or used tennis equipment in good order that you would like to donate please put in the labelled box in the clubhouse.  A little bit goes a long way in a country like Nepal. Tomas will be collecting all the donations on Sunday 10th September so you have a week or so to drop items off.

Thats it for another month. As always if you would like to ask a question or make some comment to the committee about things around the club the best way is initially via email to secretary@huntershilltennisclub.com.au and one of us will followup.

Finals Day 23rd October 2016

This is a quick reminder to all members that Finals Day is this coming Sunday. Come and watch the action on court and join us for a BBQ afterwards to celebrate. Just for catering purposes could you please text or email Jane Cowley (0408 881238 or jm_cowley@bigpond.com) if you are staying for the BBQ. There will be at least two courts open for social play so even if you're not in a final there is still plenty of tennis for everyone.

August 2016 Newsletter

Whilst we've had alot of rain and wind these past few months the courts have held up particularly well with play being able to be resumed after heavy rain within 48 hours. The work done on the courts at the end of last year has certainly been beneficial with better drainage at the courts' northern ends.

Club Championships and Finals

The dates for these are 15th and 16th October and 22nd and 23rd October. The dates have been changed as two of our Men's Badge teams are in the running to play in their finals and Graeme, our Club Captain, has been selected and will be playing in the World  Championships in Croatia, both these events clashed with the original September dates. We will hold men's, ladies and mixed, singles and doubles events. More details to follow but please put these new dates in your diary.

Presentation of all trophies and a BBQ will take place at 4pm on Sunday 23rd October after conclusion of the finals. We hope you can join us even if you aren't playing or receiving a trophy.

Trophy Holders

Could all trophies be returned polished and shiny to the clubhouse by 9th October. Please put your trophy in the corner cupboard of the ladies change room.

Monica Sheehan Trophy

This event is being held on Tuesday 23rd August from 10.30am. All ladies are encouraged to enter, a separate email will follow.

Badge News

Our Thursday Ladies team, playing in division 2, are top of the table. In this division no finals will be played and the winner decided by first past the post. Our Saturday Mens Badge teams are doing equally well. The HHLTC3 team (Div 3.1) are first, HHLTC2 (Div 2.3) are second and HHLTC1, playing in the very competitive 1.2 division, are in 7th place. We wish all teams and players the best of luck for the rest of the season.

AGM

We are bringing  the date of the Annual General Meeting forward to Sunday 6th November. We will hold the Presidents Trophy at 1pm and will follow up with the AGM and light refreshments at 4pm. We encourage all members to come and participate in both events. This is your chance to get involved with the running of the club. Please put the date in your diary.

Meditation

Meditation classes will be commencing at the clubhouse on 5th August and will be an excellent complement to the very calming yoga classes that are also conducted Friday mornings. If members come up to play on Friday mornings the balls and measuring stick will be available in the players shed to avoid disruption to the class.
