A BIG Thankyou
Thanks so much to those who tidied the gardens and helped make the clubhouse sparkle at the working bee last weekend - especially Jackie and Robert Bradshaw, Tricia Hannan, Seamus Lynch, Roger Brittain, and Jane Cowley. Well done!
Fellow members - please join us for this working bee to sharpen up the club grounds for our court opening. The jobs will not be too onerous, and will include window cleaning, clearing drains, tidying the garden and a little painting. A good time is sure to be had and light refreshments will be supplied.
Thanks in advance for your support, it would be great if you could reply by email so we can plan on how many members will be there.
We are working towards reopening the courts on January 23rd and looking forward to the club year ahead. Watch the homepage for updates.
From the 2016 Committee - Sally, Graeme, Roger, Seamus, Caroline, Jane and Andrew.
Keith Prowse Travel (KPT) has agreed on a sponsorship deal with our club and has put together these packages for our members atthe Australian Open and Wimbledon. There are a variety of options, including seats at the Finals - just click on the tournament for their packages and pricing.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE We are very grateful for the recent member donations directed to buy a new filtered chilled water unit for our clubhouse. It is lovely to have it installed for the benefit of all members in this hotter weather. These contributions to the club were recently made through our new Australian Sports Foundation account. For other members who want to support our club through tax deductible donations, we would love you to consider contributing toward our Lawn Court Upgrade project. Our head greenkeeper, and another turf specialist we consulted, have both recommended the best way to improve the drainage on our courts would be by laser level. This involves the strategic and precise placement of topsoil to fill the low spots, particularly along the northern base lines.
Our goal is to raise $4000 to cover the expense this will incur for the 2015 court renovation and start it in November. If you would like to contribute toward this project please give Roger (9817 0566) a call to discuss or just make an online donation!
Our new clubhouse front doors
This month has seen the completion of more items identified in our club's Strategic Plan. We have begun on our grounds improvement; with frosted entry doors, new exterior sensors and lighting for safety, and additional garden plantings - thanks to continued help from Caroline Swan and her donation of plants. We have more plans for the clubhouse in the new year and will let you know about those as we finalise them. All your clicks to read our newsletters on our website have achieved a significant improvement in our Google rankings, making our club much easier to find for potential members. Our daily Twitter court updates, and your accessing of them, also contribute to raising our profile in the digital world.
We have had the flagpole on court 5 assessed by council and contractors. This 14m pole has proudly stood at our club since c1920, but in its current state of disrepair the best quotes we received to renovate it or replace it were upwards of $10,000! Our committee decided it is not a priority at this stage, so sadly it will be lowered in November. We will be keeping the timber with the idea to perhaps to craft some items.. Any members who are interested to contribute ideas or wood working skills I would love to hear from you.
I have really appreciated the efforts of our wonderful committee this year - Roger, Graeme, Seamus, Jane, Caroline, & Chris. It has been a fun and very rewarding year and we welcome other members to join us. If you have some time and energy to see continued improvements to the club in 2015 either on or off the committee we look forward to hearing from you.
We hope to see you making the most of the rest of the 6 weeks of our playing season,
Sally Stobo Club President
PRESENTATION DAY Sunday 18th October Our annual Presentation Day is fast approaching. This year we will be holding the Mens Open Doubles Final on the day itself, Tim Austin and Andrew Chilcott will play Graeme Sticka and Fabrizio Perilli. The final will start at 2pm followed by a BBQ and the presentation of all the trophies and cups from the club championships and other events throughout the year. Here is a link to our 2015 club champions. Regular social tennis will still be able to be played on other courts from 1pm so please come down for what is always a sociable and enjoyable afternoon.
AGM Sunday 22nd November The very last day of play for the season will be Sunday 22nd November. We have decided to hold our AGM on that afternoon following afternoon tea ,which will be provided by the club, and in addition the last special event for the year the Shelleys Doubles will be contested! This is a mixed event and the winners have their names added to a trophy that commemorates the man whose generosity and foresight allowed the club to become established on its present site. Please add your name to the list on the white board in the players shed or email the club to enter.
We would encourage all members to consider how they can contribute to the running of our club including sitting on the committee. If you are interested in being part of the committee please contact Roger Brittain for more information and a nomination form. Alternatively if the committee is not for you but you would like to contribute in other ways-big or small- please also have a chat with Roger or any of the committee members.
ANNUAL COURT CLOSURE AND SURFACE RENOVATION Our green keepers, Green Options, will move the machinery in on Monday 23rd November. The process of tynning, scarifying and this year, laser levelling, the courts will take approximately a week after which the courts will be left to grow for about 6 weeks. The date for reopening the courts will be mid January however we will advise all members by email in the new year.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS A warm welcome to our new members Jann Anschau, Rita Picone-Di Giovanni and John Smyth. We hope you enjoy many years of good tennis and friendship here at the club.
"THE HUNTERS & COLLECTORS" GARAGE SALE TRAIL Don't forget we will be hosting this very successful and popular community event at the club on Saturday 24th October. Members are encouraged to host a table themselves ($25) or donate their quality second hand goods, which we will sell and donate all proceeds to further clubhouse improvements. Please contact Jane Cowley (0408 881238) or Caroline Swan (0407 224 668) for further information or if you would like to help run this event. Here is a link to see how big this event is.
SPRING MIXED DOUBLES Saturday 31st October 11am-3pm Entry for this fun, competitive event is limited to 20 doubles pairings and all have an equal chance to win the lucky door prizes, donated by Babolat in conjunction withTennis Ranch, of two new racquets (valued at $600). We are happy to find you a partner if you like and snacks and drinks will be provided on the day! Click on this link to sign up via the Trybooking site for this event. Entries close 20th October or before if sold out.
MEMBER MATCH UP No its not a form of speed dating but a way of finding someone to have a hit with at the club! For the next 6 months we'll be trialling a system whereby members can logon, via the members section of the web site, and using our shared "Team Up Calendar" find other members to meet and play with at mutually convenient times. We hope this encourages more people to come and play both in and outside the existing organised windows of play and to perhaps meet and play with members they may not have met before. You can choose to set your preferences if you wish to be emailed if someone is looking for a game. If you need to know how to log on to the members section please email Jane Cowley on firstname.lastname@example.org for your login name and password.
SPRING BADGE TEAMS Best of luck to our two Spring Badge teams - we have registered a Men's team captained by Graeme Sticka, and a Mixed team captained by Kitty Dufficy. The first day of play is this Saturday in this 8 week comp.
There has been an enormous amount of activity at the club over the past few weeks- the clubhouse refurbishment, Club Championships and Badge semi finals.
A big thank you to all those that helped and assisted in so many ways with the 'new look' for the clubhouse; Firstly to Inspiration Paints at Gladesville who gave us a generous discount on our paint; Gladesville Glass for new safety glass in the doors at a very competitive rate; Roger, Kitty and Ken who were on the brushes; Sara and Graeme for handyman works; Lucinda and Lee on the garden and Caroline and Jane for the ideas, purchase and loan of many of our new items. There are still a few extra touches to go up including an enhanced memorabilia display. We hope you like the refreshed look, we discovered the clubhouse has had many looks over the decades and this is another in the long history of the club.
Finally thank you to The Australian Sports Foundation who have enabled us to receive tax deductible donations. We have created an account with them in the belief that members would like to see the courts in their best possible condition. To upgrade the courts, the process of laser levelling has been identified as the best option for optimising the surface and drainage. This project will be started in November and continue for a few seasons and we members can support this initiative via tax deductible donations. Any questions? Please call Roger Brittain 9817 0566.
