Davis Cup teams at Hunters Hill highlights video

The Davis Cup practices at Hunters Hill provided one of the more special moments at the club in its recent history and the sight of all those wonderful players up close on the courts will stay in our memories for years to come.

Hunters Hill Members can be rightfully proud to have hosted the practice sessions at the club this year and I want to recognise the excellent work put in by our Green Options green keepers, led by Marty Shipp, to prepare the playing surface. In the lead up and during the practices our whole Hunters Hill team committed fully to make it so successful. Marty and Will prepared the courts and then readied them again each day, sometimes staying back until dusk to pull the covers on after practice finished. The efforts included Caroline and Jane's commitment and work to upgrade the garden and grounds; our club hosts - Jane, Martin, Kitty, Caroline, Alf, Julie, Bill, Cheryl, Kathy, Andrew, Ruth, Denise, Rita, Sue, Edmond, Deb, Joe, Kate, and Andrew Pavli all making sure we were ready for the visitors each day; and Sergio & Lee photographing the event and ensuring our Slovakian visitors were looked after. Thank you Andrew Pavli for your inspiration and help with the video. Well done everyone on your achievements.

What were two of the most wonderful aspects however was the pure joy of Members and community visitors alike to be sharing our Hunters Hill courts with players of this calibre, and for our Club to be working with Tennis Australia to play our role in supporting these Davis Cup teams.

It was indeed a special week, and I hope you enjoy the short video above to relive those special moments.

Davis Cup HHTC Practice Update #3

We congratulate the two Davis Cup teams who were nominated to play in the tie at Ken Rosewall Arena this weekend.

AUSTRALIA: Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, Sam Groth, John Peers, Lleyton Hewitt (Captain)

SLOVAKIA: Jozef (Jojo) Kovalik, Andrej Martin, Igor Zelenay, Norbert Gombos, Miloslav Mečíř (Captain)

Wednesday brought even more magic moments to our club. Marty and the team removed the covers that had kept Courts 2 and 3 dry from overnight rain. Tomic and Krygios played a friendly set that went to a tiebreaker on Court 3. On Court 2 were our new friends from Slovakia training, and we later enjoyed watching Miloslav Mecir have a gentle hit for the sheer enjoyment of tennis using his wooden racquet.

To cap of the day our committee and special guests enjoyed the Official Davis Cup dinner. We were honoured to be warmly thanked by both Lleyton Hewitt and Steve Healey (President, Tennis Australia) in their speeches and Miloslav Mecir sought us out to thank our club for our hospitality which they have appreciated. At home Miloslav is President of the Slovan Bratislava Tennis Club and he told us he appreciated the efforts our members had gone to. Thanks so much to Rita, Kate, Sue, Julie & Alf, Lee & Sergio for doing such a great job as hosts over the last two days.

The draw is on this morning at 11am, so the earliest the teams will be at the club is likely to be noon.

Davis Cup HHTC Practice Update #2

What a truly amazing day we had yesterday at our Club. Under gentle grey skies the Australian team arrived early and stayed for the morning, then the Slovakian team came mid-afternoon, bringing with them the two best male Slovakian players of all time, and played until past sunset. HHTC has never had such an array of tennis talent on its courts. There's no doubt about that!

In the morning we enjoyed watching Australia's top player Nick Kyrgios, hitting with Australia's Alex de Minaur, who was Junior finalist at Wimbledon just a few months ago. Then in the gentle evening twilight members watched tennis greats from Slovakia including Miloslav Mecir, and Dominic Hrbaty. Mecir was known as the big cat who glided around the court and was a top 10 player and Olympic Gold Singles Champion. Watching Mecir volleying with incredible touch on Court 2 late yesterday was unforgettable. Dominic Hrbaty, one of only two players to have an overall winning record with Federer was playing on the court right beside. Photos of this afternoon session will be included in the next update!

Wednesday's plan is for both teams to be there this morning, however showers are around. Marty and the team have cleared the covers off courts 2 and 3, and will standby ready to replace them if required. We will update court conditions for members on Twitter.

Thanks to Andrew Pavli for helping the club gain wider exposure from this event. Our club is the cover story in the Northern District Times today.

The Davis Cup tie begins on Friday, so today may possibly be the last time we see the teams at the club. Club Members make sure you don't miss out experiencing first hand this historic occasion for Hunters Hill.
