Two Hunters Hill Saturday Badge teams played their finals at home in glorious weather on September 3rd. Well done gentlemen!
I think we are all looking forward to the approach of spring, warmer weather, some growing of the surface and hopefully enough but not too much rain. The US Open is proving, in this first week of play, a wonderful display of Aussie talent including people like John Millman who played on our courts last year as part of the Davis Cup squad. If you've not watched it go to our web page (https://huntershilltennisclub.com.au/) or Facebook page and click on the video that Sally Stobo made last year about our Davis Cup week and see the delightful interview John gave on the joys of grass court tennis.
Badge Teams-Breaking News!!!
In exciting news two of our Mens Badge teams will be playing in Finals this Saturday (2nd September) at the club. At 11.30am HH4 ( playing in Div2.5), will play Manly whilst at 2.20pm HH3 (in Div 2.3 ) will play against Mosman. We wish both teams the best of luck and if you are able to come down to the club and show them your support-they'd love it. The weather is predicted to be a beautiful 21C and sunny so perfect for watching.
HH1 and 2 Mens teams finished the season 7th and 5th respectively. Well done guys, we hope you enjoyed the competition and for those new to the grass this season we hope you've enjoyed the experience of playing on the surface.
There are still two rounds to go (including Thursday 31st August) however none of our three teams will make the finals. HH1 and HH2 are currently in 6th and 8th position respectively in Div 1 whilst HH3 are in 6th spot in Div 2. There have been some very tough matches this season in both divisions and again we hope you have all enjoyed the competition and nature of inter club tennis particularly if it was your first season.
If anyone-either currently playing Badge or other- is interested in playing in the Spring Badge Comps (starting 7th October) which are played on Saturdays, please contact Graeme Sticka or Caroline Swan urgently to register your interest.
Ladies Special Singles
This event was held on Sunday 13th August with five players taking to the courts in warm and sunny conditions. A special mention to Liz Dossetor who dusted the cobwebs off her racquet and played very impressively after a long absence from the courts, don't leave it so long next time Liz!
The eventual winner was Kitty Dufficy who showed great fitness and form in all of her matches. Congratulations Kitty.
Don't forget to mark your diaries with the dates for the Club Championships- 13/14th October and 21st/22nd October. I'd urge all members to consider playing in the Championships. As my mother used to say its not about winning its about playing, taking part and having fun!
Graeme our Club Captain will be calling for entries closer to the dates so get out on court, practice, limber up for some singles matches perhaps, and find a partner for the doubles events.
On behalf of the committee and members I'd like to welcome David Francis and Marco Di Pietro. Marco has joined as a playing member and is looking forward to getting back and playing tennis more regularly. David is resident overseas but has joined as a social member so he can enjoy playing tennis on his trips to Sydney. As always we wish you warm friendship and many years of play here at Hunters Hill.
Vale John Lange
It was with great sadness that we heard of John’s sudden death on the 13th August. Judy Smith, one of our esteemed life members, who knew John well, wrote to let me know of John's place in club history.
"John was a tireless worker for the Club and always loved our lawn courts - not only to play on but also to care for. John first joined the Committee in 1992 and did not step down until the end of 2002. During this time John served three years as a Vice President and five years as President of the Club.
John not only loved his social tennis but was always a keen competitor and over the years won numerous Club Championship events including both the Open Men’s Singles and Open Men’s Doubles. John also represented the Club for numerous years as a badge player.
John always had an extremely keen interest in the maintenance of the courts and certainly had many long conversations with Paul Cashell, who during this period was responsible for the maintenance of the courts including the annual year end court refurbishment. John was also the backup when John Williamson (a past member) who was employed at this time to do the cutting and marking of the courts was on holidays. It was only at the end of the 2014 season that both John’s concluded this work at the club.
Finally, it is worth noting that after a visit to the Scarborough Tennis Cub in Western Australia, where John was playing tennis, he came back and suggested that the Club try a new format for our Sunday afternoon tennis. At this time Sunday afternoon tennis was a standard set with a tie break at 6 all. Suffice to say that the ‘new’ half hour block format was trialled and we have never looked back."
Rest in peace.
We encourage members to bring along visitors to play (the same visitor can visit up to three times a year) but please remember to fill in the visitors book and pay the $20 fee.
Our beautiful clubhouse is now currently being used for yoga three times a week. Both yoga teachers love the sun drenched space and peacefulness. Contact Tee (0407 827 957) or Mel (0404 870 254) directly to talk about classes. Both teachers run classes in school term time only.

If you've been to the club lately you will have noticed a large basket near the front door full of tennis equipment bound for Nepal. A big thank you to all those members who have generously donated already.
For those who are unaware Tomas Vana from Marrickville LTC will be travelling to Kathmandu in September, for a second time, as a volunteer to help run coaching clinics for junior players at Nepal's fledgling tennis academy. Tomas is collecting tennis equipment and tennis necessities to take with him to give to kids who want to play tennis but don't have the financial means to buy racquets, shoes, balls etc. If you have any new balls, new grips or used tennis equipment in good order that you would like to donate please put in the labelled box in the clubhouse. A little bit goes a long way in a country like Nepal. Tomas will be collecting all the donations on Sunday 10th September so you have a week or so to drop items off.
Thats it for another month. As always if you would like to ask a question or make some comment to the committee about things around the club the best way is initially via email to firstname.lastname@example.org and one of us will followup.

Please contact Roger Brittain if you can help email@example.com. Also, a BIG thankyou to Caroline Swan for her time and energy nurturing our garden.
Our courts were rolled with a cricket wicket roller last month and Marty aims to repeat this later in April. We are keen to hear any feedback about how the courts are playing as Green Options work to improve the playing surface.
Our club is reliant on its membership to share the costs of maintaining the courts and our club needs more members. We would like to encourage you all to bring a friend that might be interested to join the club during this special week - Sunday 29th May - Tuesday 4th June. All visitor fees will be waived and we will be offering a pro-rata reduced fee to join for the rest of 2016.

We have fun events coming up so we encourage you all to come and enjoy the courts, especially as they are playing so well after this stretch of dry weather. We are also fundraising for further clubhouse improvements. More details below, Sally Stobo & the 2016 Committee.

The club has a great new table Tennis table for Members use - A Big thank you to Ben Johnson for this donation. Balls, & bats are stored in the ladies change room corner cupboard. Its very easy to set up, so feel very welcome to meet at the clubhouse and make use of it.
We are very grateful for the recent member donations directed to buy a new filtered chilled water unit for our clubhouse. It is lovely to have it installed for the benefit of all members in this hotter weather. These contributions to the club were recently made through our new Australian Sports Foundation account. For other members who want to support our club through tax deductible donations, we would love you to consider contributing toward our Lawn Court Upgrade project. Our head greenkeeper, and another turf specialist we consulted, have both recommended the best way to improve the drainage on our courts would be by laser level. This involves the strategic and precise placement of topsoil to fill the low spots, particularly along the northern base lines.
Our goal is to raise $4000 to cover the expense this will incur for the 2015 court renovation and start it in November. If you would like to contribute toward this project please give Roger (9817 0566) a call to discuss or just make an online donation!
This month has seen the completion of more items identified in our club's Strategic Plan. We have begun on our grounds improvement; with frosted entry doors, new exterior sensors and lighting for safety, and additional garden plantings - thanks to continued help from Caroline Swan and her donation of plants. We have more plans for the clubhouse in the new year and will let you know about those as we finalise them. All your clicks to read our newsletters on our website have achieved a significant improvement in our Google rankings, making our club much easier to find for potential members. Our daily Twitter court updates, and your accessing of them, also contribute to raising our profile in the digital world.
We have had the flagpole on court 5 assessed by council and contractors. This 14m pole has proudly stood at our club since c1920, but in its current state of disrepair the best quotes we received to renovate it or replace it were upwards of $10,000! Our committee decided it is not a priority at this stage, so sadly it will be lowered in November. We will be keeping the timber with the idea to perhaps to craft some items.. Any members who are interested to contribute ideas or wood working skills I would love to hear from you.
I have really appreciated the efforts of our wonderful committee this year - Roger, Graeme, Seamus, Jane, Caroline, & Chris. It has been a fun and very rewarding year and we welcome other members to join us. If you have some time and energy to see continued improvements to the club in 2015 either on or off the committee we look forward to hearing from you.
We hope to see you making the most of the rest of the 6 weeks of our playing season,
PRESENTATION DAY Sunday 18th October
Our annual Presentation Day is fast approaching. This year we will be holding the Mens Open Doubles Final on the day itself, Tim Austin and Andrew Chilcott will play Graeme Sticka and Fabrizio Perilli. The final will start at 2pm followed by a BBQ and the presentation of all the trophies and cups from the club championships and other events throughout the year. Here is a link to our 2015 club champions. Regular social tennis will still be able to be played on other courts from 1pm so please come down for what is always a sociable and enjoyable afternoon.
AGM Sunday 22nd November
The very last day of play for the season will be Sunday 22nd November. We have decided to hold our AGM on that afternoon following afternoon tea ,which will be provided by the club, and in addition the last special event for the year the Shelleys Doubles will be contested! This is a mixed event and the winners have their names added to a trophy that commemorates the man whose generosity and foresight allowed the club to become established on its present site. Please add your name to the list on the white board in the players shed or email the club to enter.
We would encourage all members to consider how they can contribute to the running of our club including sitting on the committee. If you are interested in being part of the committee please contact Roger Brittain for more information and a nomination form. Alternatively if the committee is not for you but you would like to contribute in other ways-big or small- please also have a chat with Roger or any of the committee members.
ANNUAL COURT CLOSURE AND SURFACE RENOVATION
Our green keepers, Green Options, will move the machinery in on Monday 23rd November. The process of tynning, scarifying and this year, laser levelling, the courts will take approximately a week after which the courts will be left to grow for about 6 weeks. The date for reopening the courts will be mid January however we will advise all members by email in the new year.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
A warm welcome to our new members Jann Anschau, Rita Picone-Di Giovanni and John Smyth. We hope you enjoy many years of good tennis and friendship here at the club.

MEMBER MATCH UP
No its not a form of speed dating but a way of finding someone to have a hit with at the club! For the next 6 months we'll be trialling a system whereby members can logon, via the members section of the web site, and using our shared "Team Up Calendar" find other members to meet and play with at mutually convenient times. We hope this encourages more people to come and play both in and outside the existing organised windows of play and to perhaps meet and play with members they may not have met before. You can choose to set your preferences if you wish to be emailed if someone is looking for a game. If you need to know how to log on to the members section please email Jane Cowley on firstname.lastname@example.org for your login name and password.
SPRING BADGE TEAMS
Best of luck to our two Spring Badge teams - we have registered a Men's team captained by Graeme Sticka, and a Mixed team captained by Kitty Dufficy. The first day of play is this Saturday in this 8 week comp.
