August 2015 Newsletter

The warm weather and sunny days of late have produced beautiful playing surface conditions. We have just over three months of the season left so make sure you get down and make the most of it.

We have lots coming up- club championships, a trophy day, a community tennis event, a fund raiser and a bring a guest to play period. I would encourage you to get involved in any or all of these and support the club in whatever way you can.

Sally Stobo

This year the championships will be held over the weekends of

29-30 August

5-6 September (September 6 only if you are available)

12-13 September

Finals and the presentation BBQ on Sunday 18 October.

This year we are confining the period of play for the championships in order to allow the organisers to run and control the order of play without it stretching out over a prolonged period as it has done sometimes in the past. Keep these weekends free and an email for entry will come to you shortly for you to register. Thanks Graeme for organising this.

For the information of our new members these championships are a highlight of the club year and are keenly contested for the silver trophies and plates some of which are nearly a hundred years old. There are both singles, doubles and a youth event. If you can't find a partner for the doubles events we can help.

A warm welcome to two new members- Andy Phelan and  John Jackson. Just a reminder that the full  membership contact list is available on the website under the Members Login. If you need a reminder of the password please email

IMG_0312 Last week a council contractor trimmed the trees on the Woolwich Rd  end of the courts.

This brings more sunlight onto this northern end and maximises the drying of the courts at this time of year. We appreciate the council's support in bearing the cost of this and supporting our club.

In the next few weeks we will be sprucing up the clubhouse and doing some maintenance. Anyone who is handy with a paintbrush and would like to lend a hand would be warmly welcomed. Please contact Sally on or phone 9817-3009. Feedback we've had suggests there is potential to increase our club house rental income if we make a few cosmetic changes.

Mens Saturday Badge

Two teams played semi finals on Saturday 1 August. HH1 was narrowly defeated at home by a strong Royal Sydney 1 team, 3-5. Meanwhile our HH3 team was beaten by Manly 10. HH2 didn't make the semis but had a strong and closely contested division (2.1).  Thank you to the captains and Chris Jones for organising coordinating our teams . Well played gents and we hope to see you all back next year to give it another go!

Thursday Ladies Badge

The Autumn Ladies have two rounds left to play with HH1 sitting fifth in their division and HH2 placing 4th and have a good chance to make the semi finals. Good luck ladies for the rest of the comp.

UpComing Events

Monica Sheehan Trophy  Tuesday 18 August

This is a ladies round robin doubles held every year and is named after a life member Monica Sheehan who sadly passed away last year after a life time of commitment to the community and the tennis club. Save the date and an email will arrive shortly.

Saturday Mixed Spring Badge

We have a few members interested in forming a mixed team to play in this competition which commences on Saturday 10 October and runs for 8 consecutive weeks finishing Saturday December 5 with finals. Anyone interested please contact Kitty Dufficy on 0422 579 183 or

Spring Mixed Tournament  Saturday 31 October

To build on the success of our community event earlier in the year, and raise funds for the club, we are hosting a mixed doubles event sponsored by Tennis Ranch and Babolat. Open to members and the community, entry numbers will be limited to 20 pairs, so when details  are sent out make sure you get in fast to ensure your spot in what promises to be another enjoyable day. Cost will be $50 per pair with $700 worth of donated prizes on offer to all entries. Thanks to Roger Brittain who will be co-ordinating this day.

Bring a guest for free 20 October - 7 November

We encourage all members to share the club with their friends and fellow tennis lovers. We have attracted 20 new members this year, and we would like to see this number increased in the next season. One way of doing this is to recommend the club to all your networks and let them experience the joy and magic of playing on grass. So please bring a guest to the social tennis windows or in the member playing times during these weeks for free.

Garage Sale Trail Saturday October 24

To raise some funds for the club, promote and encourage reuse and repurposing, and build community connections, we will be participating in this successful statewide event. Tables will be available to rent for $25, and members and the community may take this opportunity to declutter and sell their no longer needed household items, and others can grab the chance to find some treasures. Grab a delicious sausage sizzle on the day. Club members will be warmly welcomed to get involved with this event, please contact Jane at or 0408 881238.
